SALAZOPYRIN

This medicine contains the active ingredient Sulfasalazine which belongs to a group of anti-inflammatory medicines known as aminosalicylates. These medicines are used for the treatment and prevention of the inflammation of gastrointestinal tract, accompanied by ulcers of the intestine and pain in the stomach. Sulfasalazine is prescribed for the treatment of Ulcerative colitis (inflammation and ulcers in the colon), Crohn`s disease (inflammation of the whole digestive tract, or just some of its parts), and for the reduction of swelling and stiffness in the joints (Rheumatoid arthritis).

Is Sulfasalazine suitable for me?

Sulfasalazine is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to Sulfasalazine, salicylates or other ingredients of this medicine
• if you are suffering from porphyria (a rare blood disorder)
• if it is meant for a child under the age of 2

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have liver or kidney problems
• have deficiency of enzyme known as glucose-6-dehydrogenase
• have lung problems
• are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breast feeding

Sulfasalazine interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Sulfasalazine?

This medicine is available in form of a gastro-resistent tablet.

You should take Sulfasalazine exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

• Ulcerative Colitis: the usual dose is 1000 to 2000 mg taken four times a day. The dose is usually reduced to 2000 mg per day.
• Crohn’s Disease: the usual dose is 1000 to 2000 mg taken 4 times a day.
• Rheumatoid arthritis: the usual starting dose is one 500 mg tablet per day. the dose is gradually increased to the maximum of 3000 mg per day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose. Like all medicines Sulfasalazine can cause side effects, including:

Very common:

• Indigestion, heartburn
• Nausea

Common:

• Dizziness
• Difficulty sleeping
• Headache
• Changes in taste
• Abdominal pains
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting 
• Ringing in the ears
• Blood shot eyes
• Inflamed mouth (stomatitis)
• Cough
• Itching of the skin
• Joint pain
• Protein in urine
• Fever
