This medicine contains the active ingredient salbutamol which belongs to a group of medicines called bronchodilators. These medicines make the breathing easier by widening the airways in the lungs. Salbutamol is used for the treatment of asthma by reducing the symptoms (tight chest, wheezing and coughing) and preventing the attack, as well as for chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the airways) and emphysema (disease of the lungs that makes breathing difficult). It also reduces the symptoms caused by different allergens. 

Is Salbutamol suitable for me?

Salbutamol is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to salbutamol or to other ingredients of this medicine
• if you are pregnant and go into premature labor
• if you have a history of miscarriages
• if you are taking beta-blockers such as propranolol

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have an overactive thyroid gland
• have heart problems, irregular heart rhythm
• have high blood pressure or angina
• have diabetes
• are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding

Salbutamol interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Salbutamol?

This medicine is available in form of syrup and tablet.

You should take salbutamol exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

The usual dose for syrup:

• adults:10 ml of syrup (4 mg), 3 or 4 times a day. The maximum dose is 80 ml (32 mg) per day;
• children 2-6 years: 2.5 to 5 ml of the syrup (1 to 2 mg), 3 or 4 times a day;
• children 6-12 years: 5 ml of syrup (2 mg), 3 or 4 times a day;
• children over 12 years: 5 to 10 ml of syrup (2 to 4 mg), 3 or 4 times a day.

The usual dose for tablet in adults is 4 mg 3 or 4 times a day. The maximum dose is 8 mg 3 or 4 times a day. The usual dose for children is 1 to 2 mg 3 or 4 times a day.

 Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Salbutamol side effects?

Like all medicines salbutamol can cause side effects, including:

Common:

• feeling shaky
• headache
• muscle cramps

Rare:

• low level of potassium in your blood
• changes in the salt balance of your body
• increased blood flow to your extremities
