This medicine contains the active ingredient nimesulide which is also called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), or just 'anti-inflammatory'. NSAIDs are used to ease pain, stiffness and inflammation of conditions that affect muscles, bones and joints. Nimesulide is prescribed for the treatment of acute pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and painful periods.

Nimesulide, as well as other NSAIDs, eases pain and inflammation by blocking the production of chemicals called ‘prostaglandins’, which are produced at sites of injury or damage.

Is Nimesulide suitable for me?

Nimesulide is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to nimesulide, other NSAIDs or other ingredients of this medicine
  • if you have ever had a peptic ulcer or bleeding in your gut
  • if you have any gut disorders
  • if you have severe heart problems
  • if you have severe liver or kidney problems
  • if you are addicted to drugs or other substances
  • if you drink a lot of alcohol
  • if you have had bleeding in the brain (stroke)
  • if you have any other problem with bleeding or problems due to reduced blood clotting
  • if you suffer from fever or flu
  • if you are in the last three months of pregnancy
  • if you are breast-feeding

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have ever had any disease of the stomach or intestine
  • have asthma or any allergic disease 
  • have heart, kidney or liver problems
  • have excessive fluid loss, salt restriction or heart failure 
  • have blood clotting disorder
  • have high blood pressure,
  • have diabetes
  • have a condition porphyria 
  • suffer from any stomach or bowel disorders (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease)
  • have a connective-tissue disorder, such as systemic lupus erythematosus

Nimesulide interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Nimesulide?

This medicine is available in form of granules for oral suspension and orodispersible tablet.

You should take nimesulide exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will be prescribed according to your condition and needs.

  • The usual dose for granules is one 100 mg sachet taken twice a day after meals. The granules should be dissolved in water (about 1/8 liter) and drink immediately after dissolving.
  • The usual dose for orodispersible tablet is one 100 mg tablet taken twice a day after meals. The usual dose for children is 50 mg taken twice a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Nimesulide side effects?

Like all medicines nimesulide can cause side effects, including:

Common

  • diarrhea
  • nausea
  • vomit
  • slight changes in the blood related to liver function (increased liver enzymes)

Uncommon:

  • shortness of breath
  • dizziness
  • increased blood pressure
  • constipation
  • bloating of stomach
  • duodenal ulcer or stomach ulcer
  • itching
  • rash
  • increased sweating
  • swelling (edema)
