This medicine contains the active ingredient Glimepiride which belongs to a group of medicines known as oral hypoglycemic (sulphonylureas). These medicines increase the amount of insulin (hormone produced in pancreas) and in that way they control sugar levels in the blood. Glimepiride is prescribed for the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus.

Is Glimepiride suitable for me?

Glimepiride is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• If you are allergic to Glimepiride or other ingredients of this medicine
• If you have type I diabetes  
•  If you have kidney or liver problems
• If you suffer from ketoacidosis  
• If you have reduced consciousness or coma resulting from your diabetes

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding
• If you have porphyria (blood disease).

Glimepiride interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Glimepiride?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take Glimepiride exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will be prescribed according to your condition and needs.

• The usual starting dose is 1 mg tablet taken once a day (it is recommended to take it after breakfast). The maximum dose for this medicine is 6 mg per day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Glimepiride side effects?

Like all medicines Glimepiride can cause side effects, including:

• Lower blood sugar than normal (hypoglycaemia)
• Decrease in the number of blood cells
• Allergic reactions
• Abnormal liver function
• Nausea, vomiting,
• diarrhea,
• feeling full or bloated
• abdominal pain
• Decrease in the amount of sodium level in your blood
