This medicine contains the active ingredient fluphenazine which belongs to a group of medicines called phenothiazines. These medicines affect the chemical balance in the brain by restoring it. Fluphenazine is prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia (you see, hear, feel things that do not exist, have strange and frightening thoughts, you are depressed and anxious, you cannot differentiate between fiction and reality) and paranoid psychoses (you are anxious unusually suspicious).

Is Fluphenazine suitable for me?

Fluphenazine is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you have an allergy (hypersensitivity) to fluphenazine, other phenothiazine medicines, or any other ingredient of this medicine
• you have a tumor on the adrenal gland
• you have ever had a stroke or mini stroke
• you have severe heart problems, liver or kidney problems
• you have severe depression
• you have a blood disorder
• you have been recently exposed to organophosphates

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have asthma, a lung infection, or other lung or breathing problems or increased pressure in the eyes or glaucoma
• if you have Alzheimer disease, dementia, Parkinson disease, or Reye syndrome
• if you have had high blood prolactin levels or a history of certain types of cancer or if you are at risk of breast cancer
• are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding
• have epilepsy, depression, glaucoma (raised pressure in your eye), or myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness).
• have a blood disorder.
• have ever had jaundice
• are going to have an operation soon

Fluphenazine interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Fluphenazine?

This medicine is available in form of a film-coated tablet.

You should take fluphenazine exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

• The usual starting dose is 0.5 to 10 mg per day taken in divided doses every 6 to 8 hours.
• The usual maintenance dose is from 1 to 5 mg which can be taken as a single daily dose.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Fluphenazine side effects?

Like all medicines fluphenazine can cause side effects, including:   

• drowsiness or tiredness
• abnormal production of breast milk in men and women
• breast enlargement in men
• infrequent, light or loss of menstrual periods
• sexual problems
• insomnia
• feeling excited, agitated
• headache, stuffy nose, vomiting
• difficulty passing urine or lack of control over passing urine
• blurred vision, dry mouth
• skin rashes
• constipation
• headache
• fast heartbeat
