This medicine contains the active ingredient doxycycline which belongs to a group of medicines called tetracycline antibiotics. These medicines are used for the treatment of infections by killing bacteria that cause them. Doxycycline is prescribed for the treatment of many bacterial infections, and some of them are infections of chest, lungs, urinary tract, skin, eyes, and mouth. It is also used for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections, and infections such as cholera, brucellosis, leptospirosis and psittacosis. It is also effective for the prevention of certain infections such as scrub typhus, traveler’s diarrhea, malaria and leptospirosis.

Is Doxycycline suitable for me?

Doxycycline is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to doxycycline or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
• if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breast feeding.
• if it is meant for a child under 12 years of age.

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have liver or kidney problems.
• have myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness).
• have porphyria (blood disease).
• have (or have ever had) systemic lupus erythematosus (an allergic condition).
• have syphilis.
• have ever had an alcohol addiction.

Doxycycline interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Doxycycline?

This medicine is available in form of a capsule.

You should take doxycycline exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will be prescribed to you according to your condition and needs.

• The minimal dose for the treatment of skin infections such as acne is 50 mg per day.
• The usual dose for most of the conditions is 100 to 200 mg per day, according to severity.
• The maximum dose is prescribed for the treatment of syphilis, 300 mg per day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Doxycycline side effects?

Like all medicines doxycycline can cause side effects, including:

Common side effects:

• stomach pain, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, vomiting
• dry mouth 
• redness of the skin
• ringing or buzzing noise in the ear 
• sore and itchy rectal and/or genital area

Uncommon side effects:

• bowel inflammation
• liver and pancreas problems
• increased levels of urea in the blood
• pericarditis (inflammation affecting the heart)
• discoloration and/or lack of growth of teeth
• discoloration of the thyroid tissue
• loose nails
