This medicine contains the active ingredient Doxazosin is one of the medicines called alpha-blockers. These medicines are used to control some nerve impulses by stopping them. This causes your blood vessel walls to relax and reduces high blood pressure. Beside the treatment of hypertension, Doxazosin is prescribed for the treatment of prostate gland enlargement (problems with passing urine). It causes the muscles surrounding the bladder exit and prostate gland to relax, so that urine is passed easily.

Is Doxazosin suitable for me?

Doxazosin is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Doxazosin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
• if you are breastfeeding
• if you are not 18 years old (or more)
• if you have an enlarged prostate gland and low blood pressure
• if you have orthostatic hypotension  
• if you need to treat an enlarged prostate gland but you also have any kind of congestion or blockage in your urinary tract, a longstanding infection of the urinary tract or you have bladder stones
• have overflow incontinence (no  urge to urinate), or anuria (not producing any urine) which are cause or not by kidney problems

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have liver or heart disease
• are pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• have planned eye surgery because of cataract

Doxazosin interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Doxazosin?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take Doxazosin exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The usual starting dose is 1 mg tablet taken once a day, and after one or two weeks of treatment it could be increased to 2 or 4 mg. the maximum dose for prostate gland enlargement is 8 mg per day, and the maximum dose for hypertension is 16 mg per day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose. Like all medicines Doxazosin can cause side effects, including:

Common side effects:

• Dizziness, vertigo, headache
• Low blood pressure  
• Swelling
• Respiratory tract infection  
• Rhinitis (inflammation of the lining of the nose)
• Stomach pains, nausea, vomiting
• Urinary tract infection, urinary incontinence
• inflammation of bladder (cystitis)  
• Sleepiness, weakness
• Indigestion, heartburn, dry mouth  
• Itching  
• Back pain, painful muscles  
• Flu-like symptoms
