HYGROTON

This medicine contains the active ingredient Chlorthalidone which belongs to a group of medicines called diuretics, also known as water tablets. These medicines cause the kidneys to produce more urine, and in that way they free your body from retaining the extra fluid. Chlorthalidone is prescribed for the treatment of edema (water retention caused by heart failure), hypertension (high blood pressure), retention of water caused by liver or kidney disease and diabetes insipidus (frequent urination).

Is Chlorthalidone suitable for me?

Chlortalidone is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to Chlorthalidone or to other ingredients of this medicine
• if you have problems with passing urine
• if you have ever had gout or kidney stones
• If you have sugar intolerance
• If you have serious kidney or liver problems
• If you have problems with levels of potassium, sodium, calcium, urea or certain salts in your blood
• If you have Addison`s disease
• If you are taking lithium

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• have diabetes mellitus
• have liver, kidney or prostate problems
• have high cholesterol
• are pregnant or breast-feeding.
• have gout or systemic lupus erythematosus 

Chlorthalidone interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Chlorthalidone?

This medicine is available in form of a tablet.

You should take Chlorthalidone exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. The dose will be prescribed according to your condition and needs.

The usual starting dose for most of the conditions is between 25 and 50 mg taken once a day. The usual maintenance dose is between 25 and 200 mg.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose. What are Chlorthalidone side effects?

Like all medicines Chlorthalidone can cause side effects, including:

Very common side effects:

• low blood levels of potassium
• increased blood levels of uric acid
• increased blood levels of cholesterol

 Common side effects:

• low levels of sodium
• tiredness, confusion,
• muscle twitching,
• fits or coma
• low levels of magnesium
• high blood sugar levels
• skin rash
• low blood pressure
• dizziness
• loss of appetite
• stomach disturbance
• impotence in men.
