This medicine contains the active ingredient betamethasone which belongs to a group of medicines called topical corticosteroids (topical steroids). It is prescribed to relieve symptoms of skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis, which are manifested as inflammation, redness and itching.

Is Betamethasone suitable for me?

Betamethasone is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

• if you are allergic to betamethasone or to other ingredients of this medicine
• if you have skin problems such as acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis (itching around your back passage or private parts), skin infection

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• are using it for a chronic leg ulcer
• you are applying to a large surface area
• you are applying the cream on broken skin or within the skin folds
• you are applying near eyes or on eyelids
• are pregnant or breastfeeding

Betamethasone interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Betamethasone?

This medicine is available in form of cream, ointment and cutaneous solution

You should take betamethasone exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

• You usually apply betamethasone once or twice a day, and this may be reduced as your skin begins to get better.
• The amount that you should apply is commonly measured by fingertip units (FTUs). Your doctor will tell you how many of the FTUs to use.  

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Betamethasone side effects?

Like all medicines betamethasone can cause side effects, including:

Common:

• a feeling of burning, pain, irritation or itching of the skin

Very rare:

• risk of infection
• an allergic skin reaction
• thinning and dryness of your skin
• an increase or reduction in hair growth or hair loss and changes in skin color
• weight gain
• cloudy lens in the eye (cataract) or increased pressure in eye (glaucoma)
• high blood pressure
