ALPHALIPOIN

This medicine contains the active ingredient alpha-lipoic acid which is a substance that is formed in the body's own metabolism of the higher forms of life and that affects certain metabolic processes in the body. In addition, alpha-lipoic acid has properties which protect nerve cells from reactive products of decomposition (antioxidant). This medicine is prescribed for the treatment of paresthesia in diabetic nerve damage (polyneuropathy).

Is Alpha-lipoic acid suitable for me?

Alpha-lipoic acid is not suitable for everyone. Do not use

• if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to alpha-lipoic acid or to any of the other ingredients in this medicine
• if it is meant for a child or adolescent

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

• are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breast-feeding

Alpha-lipoic acid interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Alpha-lipoic acid?

This medicine is available in form of a capsule.

You should take alpha-lipoic acid exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. You will be prescribed your dose according to your needs.

• The usual dose is 200mg to 600 mg of alpha-lipoic acid approximately 30 minutes before the first meal.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Also, this medicine works best if there is a constant amount in the blood. To help keep this amount constant, do not miss any doses and take the medicine at the same time each day. Do not take two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Alpha-lipoic acid side effects?

Like all medicines alpha-lipoic acid can cause side effects, including:

Very rare:

• change of taste
• nausea, vomiting
• pain in the stomach or digestive tract
• diarrhea
• lowering of blood glucose levels
• dizziness, sweating
• headache
• vision disturbance
• rash, hives (urticaria) and itching
